Using intersectionality theory, investigators examined Black women principals’ cross-cultural experiences in schools in the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. While slavery, colonialism, and Apartheid serve as intersections among the women’s experiences, the findings suggested that women’s constructions of success are strongly shaped by their gender and race. Deeply rooted in their cultural and familial histories are sources of courage, inspiration, and values that impel the women leaders to practice leadership that is inclusive, fair, and socially just.
