Abstract

When journalists revealed high lead in the drinking water of Flint, Michigan, educators responded with empathy. This roundtable features five diverse, interdisciplinary educational efforts inspired by the Flint water crisis. Building on scholarship of eco-justice pedagogy and place-based education, these presentations expand the definition of environmental education while directly addressing the conference theme of action and educational equity. Presentations focus on a high school environmental justice course; the role of journalism in informal education; the impact of a free crisis-based university course; the multiple layers of learning when educators simultaneously teach about and document a crisis; and how a crisis can prompt identity reimagination. These lessons from Flint can apply in other contexts to provoke civic engagement around environmental issues.
