Abstract

As students strive to be successful in the years of their primary and secondary education, barriers that originate outside of the classroom often hinder progress. Mental health is a concern for many students who may experience trauma, such as bullying or victimization, involvement in the child welfare system, immigrant status, or general isolation and exclusion from the schooling process. Policies, programs, and practices that address mental health inside and outside the classroom can help students succeed. This fireside chat focuses on ways educators and researchers are working together to address sources of trauma for students by understanding the educational risk trauma poses, providing trauma-informed instruction, and cultivating positive school cultures.
