Session Summary

42.019 - Community Engagement and Participatory Action Research

Sat, April 29, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 221 A&B

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Community engaged participatory action research is frequently dismissed by academia as a reliable source of data. Administrators, and sometimes faculty, often times see community-based research as service and not scholarship (Fine, 2008). However, the interest research that is transformative is increasing among emerging scholars. Anderson and Herr (2005) contend that the constraints of dissertation work often deter faculty advisors from supporting their advisees’ desire of embarking in such projects. The URBAN Network works to foster spaces in which scholar-activists and community activists can find support to develop work what is academic rigorous and transformative. This Fireside Chat will help orient students who desire to do community engaged work, but may not find support in their home institutions.
