18.019 - Supporting Schools in "Unexpected" Places: Standing Rock and Chicago Freedom Square

Abstract

Upon first glance, the community schools created at Standing Rock and in Chicago’s Freedom Square seem unexpected; however, for Black, brown and Indigenous peoples whose public schools have ignored their knowledges and histories, education beyond school walls in “unexpected” places have been part of their survival. In this session, we ask: In what ways can educational researchers serve as supporters to efforts that began at local, community levels? What does scholarship look like if it is rooted in relationship with those who engage in schools in “unexpected” places? This session describes the work of communities who use spaces of resistance to create new sites of research and teaching.
