Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

In this roundtable session four papers explore conceptions and practices of socioscientific issues (SSI). Across the four papers the authors explore the emotional experiences of secondary science teachers as they implement an unconventional pedagogy related to climate change, examine the qualitative research to investigate teachers’ challenges to incorporate argumentation into practice, secondary-school coaches’ conceptions and practices of STEM education in a school-board in Ontario, Canada; particularly, focusing on available spaces for addressing SSIs and prioritizing socio-political actions, and how learners construct arguments concerning animal overpopulation and encroachment through the lens of SSI. These papers span research from the United States and Canada with k-12 STEM educators.
