This symposium presents findings of a Center for Civil Rights Remedies/Southern Poverty Law Center study covering schools that practice corporal punishment. The findings include school level findings on other forms of discipline. The study addresses questions such as, is the use of corporal punishment more likely found in schools with lower than average suspension rates? Is corporal punishment for typically in use by schools that have harsh disciplinary climates? The report explores the disparities in corporal punishment by race, gender, and disability status. The report describes the number of schools that still practice corporal punishment, the distribution of rates of corporal punishment by subgroup in those schools, and more.
