A panel of leading innovators will examine advances in design infrastructure to supporting new learning, to understand how these approaches may be rapidly transformed into actions to improve the opportunity for underserved learners. Using games as well as more traditional approaches, participants draw on experience with ontologies, which are structured maps of knowledge used to create and evaluate interventions and assessments. Experienced across levels from pre-school to university, and settings (urban, suburban, and small rural villages), technology has served as both toolset and learning platform. The panelists will reflect on at least two significant extensions of these applications. The first is whether "out there" ontologies can be transformed and validated as structures for internal maps of human learning, or the “learnome.” Loosely based on genomic models, internal maps of learning should represent the degree and strength of structures and content in each learner's repertoire. A significant research problem on its own, it would also allow the development of deeper personalized learning. Another increasingly urgent question of panelists is how to embed social and interpersonal goals in potentially isolating technology. It has become increasingly clear that we should simultaneously support civil and compassionate human interactions during academic and practical learning.
