We aimed to analyze how selected student and school characteristics may affect teacher job satisfaction besides teacher factors through hierarchical linear regression and commonality analysis of Learning and Teaching International Surveys on the U.S. We found that student variables explain 4.5% of the variance of teacher job satisfaction. School variables explained an additional 3.1% over and above student variable. School variables explained 25.5% over and above student and school variables. The commonality analysis revealed that student, school and teacher variables uniquely contribute 0.4%, 1.9% and 25.4% of variance. After controlling for teacher variables, only principal job satisfaction and school autonomy for instructional policies were significant school variables predicting job satisfaction. Findings provide important implications for educational policy for retaining teachers.
