Integrating Children's Literature in Elementary Math Methods: Fostering Understandings and Connections

Fri, April 28, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Lone Star Ballroom Salon B

Abstract

Despite numerous children’s books available, pre-service teachers (PSTs) still are unaware of various strategies of integrating children literature in mathematics. The knowledge about integrating children’s literature needs to be built in teacher education programs to help them develop conceptual models of integration for future teaching decisions. The research study uses a multiple case study design to explore PSTs attitudes and perceptions about integrating children’s literature to teach elementary mathematics concepts; expose PSTs to strategies of integrating children’s literature in math; and examine the changes in PSTs attitudes and perceptions. Results from the study would highlight the need to expose PSTs to literature integration with math and also provide a model that can be used as a tool to achieve this.
