Synchronous online learning is a specific area within online learning that is gaining importance. Both instructors and students realize the necessity of synchronous interactions for teaching and learning experiences in online learning. This systematic review examined 157 articles on synchronous online learning from 34 different countries. Instructional setting, subject areas, participants, research designs, independent and dependent variables, synchronous online technologies and data collection tools of these synchronous online studies are described. The findings from this systematic review benefit those who teach synchronously online and can also be used to enhance future studies on synchronous online learning.
