Multiculturally competent student affairs professionals are required to effectively meet the needs of today’s diverse student population. However, little is known about how these professionals acquire these skills. Using Sue’s (2001) Multidimensional Model of Cultural Competence, this study examined the multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills gained by student affairs professionals through their participation in an experiential cohort exploring race and ethnicity. Through exposure to new content, conversations with others, and opportunities to apply their learning in new contexts, participants’ gained multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills. Results of the study have implications for graduate preparation programs and professional development opportunities for student affairs professionals.
