This qualitative study investigated the early communication between one Latina mother and her four-year-old daughter with developmental delays (DD). The authors collected video recorded observations and interviews in the participants’ home setting across five months. Data was analyzed using video elicitation techniques. This preliminary case is the first of a larger multiple case study using replication design logic. Three findings emerged from this case study report. The first revealed the communicative responsivity between mother and child. The second described the generation of pre-linguistic signs evolving between mother and child. Lastly, the authors uncovered an idiosyncratic sign system used by family members in the home context.
