This paper shares findings from a study of an after-school youth participatory action research (YPAR) program in the U.S. Southwest. 16 students in 7th and 8th participated in the program in the spring of 2015, including students of color, students from working-class backgrounds, and students identified for English language learner (ELL) and special education services. Students read multicultural young adult texts and engaged theoretical concepts to discuss social issues in their school and community and to develop action research projects. This paper examines how the activist setting of YPAR provided the opportunity of using young adult literature as tool for social change.
