"I Need to Do Justice to This Topic": Enacting Asian American History in Elementary Classrooms

Abstract

Scant social studies research examines the teaching of American history in elementary contexts. This study used an AsianCrit lens to examine the ways in which three Asian American elementary teachers enacted Asian American history in an urban Texas school district. The teachers' various pedagogical approaches resulted in the maintenance, complication, or disruption of the official narrative of history and demonstrated a range of citizenship constructs. Although each participant was aware of the particular ways Asian Americans are racialized and positioned in U.S. society, this knowledge manifested in their teaching in starkly different ways.
