The purpose of this descriptive survey study was to describe and compare the ways secondary band and orchestra teachers continue playing their primary musical instruments in and out of the classroom. NAfME respondents indicated that they taught band (n = 525) and orchestra (n = 381). Respondents reported playing their instruments more frequently (a) for their least-advanced students; (b) for their middle school students; (c) if they were string players and orchestra teachers. Respondents reported (94.9%) continuing to play their instruments outside the classroom. Both band and orchestra teachers (a) believed modeling was related to student learning, student engagement, student motivation, and student/teacher relationship; and (b) playing outside of the classroom was related to teacher identity and teacher personal satisfaction/wellbeing.
