Using Sacred Art, Bibles, and Open-Ended Questions for Religious Instruction in Catholic Elementary Schools

Abstract

This qualitative research project describes how students and teachers in fourth and fifth grade Catholic school classrooms engaged with their faith while using sacred art, the Bible, and open-ended questions to facilitate religious instruction. Researchers found that when using art and Bible-based materials, teachers used student-centered pedagogies and content that encouraged intense participation and higher order thinking. Students felt more engaged in the lessons and felt that they were learning about their faith and becoming better Catholics. Researchers concluded that a constructivist approach to religious instruction encouraged a student-centered pedagogy and helped students develop new understandings of themselves as Catholic.
