An Argument for Service-Learning as a Spiritual Avenue for Christian and Secular Border Crossings in Higher Education

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This paper will focus on the contradictions that are often present in higher education in regard to secularity, pluralism and religion and will include a brief history of these issues. Following this historical summary, I will make an argument that service learning projects as part of the university classroom experience, can provide an avenue to explore a faith-based perspective without violating the secular trend or demand of higher education institutions. I will also provide a practical example of service learning and report the results of how it has impacted our university students and those they have served over a 10-year period.
