Values of Six Strategies for Reading Comprehension and Memorization: A Study in Multilanguages

Mon, May 1, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Using PISA 2009, this study investigated values of six strategies for reading comprehension and memorization: Concentrate easy parts, Repeat read, Discuss contents, Underline text, Summarize in own words, and Read aloud to another one, reported by fifteen-year-old students among seven main languages. The study identified relationships of the values with students’ attitudes toward reading, time spend reading, online reading, and two factors of activities in language class by partial correlations, and predicted reading achievement. The results demonstrated that Underline text and Summarize in own words were most valuable; females valued five strategies higher than males; both factors in language class were closely correlated with students’ values; and values of the six reading strategies may predict students’ reading achievement well.
