Abstract

Technological innovations over the past several years have made it much easier to individualize classroom instruction based on student skill level and developmental trajectory. One such program, which involves both personalization and blended learning, is Teach to One: Math (TTO), a middle-school mathematics model managed by New Classrooms Innovation Partners. This paper reports findings from the year-one i3 evaluation of TTO in five treatment and 14 control schools in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Overall, across all grades, we find a modest, positive, marginally significant effect on student mathematics achievement (ES=0.14; p<.10), although the effects vary across grades. Given the early implementation stage, the findings suggest that TTO does hold some promise, particularly for high-poverty, high-minority schools and contexts.
