Exploring Veterinary Students' Learning Experience and the Perceived Role of a Medical Error Case

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Crockett D

Abstract

Medical errors are an inevitable reality in healthcare, which cause severe consequences for patients and medical professionals. Yet, past errors may provide great learning opportunities when carefully employed in education. To achieve this, a video-based case-based learning module on medical errors was designed and developed based on real experience. With the aim to explore how veterinary students experience learning from the module and to understand how they perceive the role the module plays in preparing them for future career, the authors recruited seven senior veterinary students and conducted in-depth individual interviews. Through inductive thematic analysis, the authors identified three major themes: cognitive engagement, emotional reassurance, and alert to potential pitfalls. Implications for instructional designers and medical educators are also discussed.
