Targeted Learning Outcomes, Primary Assessment Activity, and Learner Perceptions of Attitudinal Learning in Four MOOCs

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This study examined learner perceptions of attitudinal learning in relation to the primary assessment activity within four MOOCs designed for attitudinal learning on a social topic. Using an author-created survey that included learner reports on general learning and attitudinal learning outcomes (cognitive, affective and behavioral), learner perceptions of learning were collected. Results revealed that learners who took MOOCs that utilized assessment activities focusing on behavioral learning did not report higher perceptions of behavioral learning. In contrast, learners from MOOCs utilizing assessment activities that focused on cognitive learning reported higher perceptions of cognitive learning. Learners that identified cognitive focus activities or behavioral focus activities as most impactful learning activities had no statistically significant differences in their perceptions of attitudinal learning outcomes.
