The Study of Women in Dentistry: A Review Since 1975

Sun, April 30, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

In 1975 Tillman called for research on recruiting women into the profession, practice patterns of women, characteristics of women dentists, and research on the dental school environment and its effect on female students. This review paper looks to answer the question: How have women in dentistry been studied since 1975? A systematic review was conducted and included literature on women in dentistry from 1975-2016. Practice patterns and characteristics of women dentists are prevalent in the literature, but the reasons for these are left unanswered. The review indicates disparity in income, position and leadership. Further research should focus on the why’s and how’s of women in dentistry, income equality and test interventions that may advance women in leadership in the profession.
