Radiation therapy as a primary cancer treatment is increasing while radiation research is decreasing. In an effort to reverse this trend the National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a five-year interdisciplinary grant supporting the design and research of an innovative 6-day educational intervention integrating radiobiology with radiation physics. This design-based research case study documents the iterative design of a collaboration-based instructional activity, the Virtual Hospital (VH), and its impact on promoting interaction among physicians, radiobiologists, and radiation physicists while solving problems. Findings indicate objectives were met; and activity educational quality and effectiveness were evident. Evaluations results denote participants new to novel collaboration activities rated positive cognitive aspects, positive interaction aspects, and instructional strategies of the activity as significant descriptors.
