Abstract

Supplemental Instruction (SI) targets historically difficult courses through optional, peer-led group study sessions. We examined the benefits of an SI program on achievement in Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) courses at a large, research intensive, military-serving university. Longitudinal path modeling was used to examine the effectiveness of SI attendance on final course grades in two sequential A&P (I & II) courses over an academic year. Results indicated that SI attendance in both courses had a significant positive effect on course grades, even after controlling for prior achievement. Results also indicated significant indirect effects of attending SI in A&P I on A&P II grade. Thus, we provide strong evidence that participation in SI is beneficial for students’ achievement in science.
