Given the increase emphases on engagement following the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, 2015), more theoretical clarity and empirical work about the dynamic system of student engagement presents potential directions for the field. In this study, we employ a novel and powerful growth modeling to explore how changes in perception of control and self-belief relates to changes in disengagement and how all three relate to subsequent student orientation to and engagement in school. By adding to current theory about how these factors change and influence one another during the transition into high school and how these changes relate to distal school outcomes, practitioners may intervene more strategically to disrupt negative patterns of student motivation and engagement.
