Sun, April 30, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This research paper will present the perceptions of 12 Hispanic parents on the role home and school collaborations play in raising English: Spanish bilingual children, the role the home environment has on linguistic and academic development in children, and the influence the school environment has on the language and academic development of children who were receiving instruction through a bilingual education program. Over all, parents reported: 1.) not being well-informed on the bilingual education program(s) used to educate their child, 2.) having limited knowledge on topics such as language acquisition, effective strategies that can be used at home to promote literacy, and 3.) the role they can play in helping their child succeed academically.
