Making Sense of It All: Meta-Ethnography and Public Pedagogy Research

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This paper proposes meta-ethnography as a well-suited methodology for public pedagogy scholars seeking to make sense of the research on specific sites of public pedagogy as a way of beginning to conceptualize the unique forms of pedagogy that arise in those sites. The authors draw on a meta-ethnography of scholarship on race and video games to demonstrate the kind of pedagogical insights that can be gleaned from such an approach, in this case revealing pedagogies that contribute to the formation of a racialized society. Finally, meta-ethnography can also prove quite helpful in grappling with the whole range of political responses to such (racialized) public pedagogies, allowing scholars to be better informed about the limitations and possibilities for praxis.
