The racial contexts in which charter schools emerge affects who attends them and the ends these schools serve. Amid a growing body of multidisciplinary scholarship about the racial segregation of charter schools (Frankenberg, Siegel-Hawley and Wang 2010; Garcia 2008; Zimmer et al. 2009), there are few studies that examine other dimensions of charter school racial contexts. In this paper, I examine whether and how race is used in local discourse about charter school closures. This discourse closures reflects local intergroup dynamics, competition for resources and institutional control, and the persistence of racial stratification in educational opportunities and outcomes.
