Native-Immigrant Gaps in Performance and Attitudes Toward Mathematics: Analysis of PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2012 Data

Abstract

This analysis looks at the Program for International Student Assessment 2012 data, a study of the skills of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science literacy. The purpose of this study was so examine if any patterns emerge related to students’ achievement and attitudes towards mathematics depending on their immigration status. The research goals of this study were to determine whether or not there were (1) differences in performance between native and immigrant students (2) differences in native and immigrant students’ belief in the importance of mathematics, (3) differences in native and immigrant students’ perceptions of their parents belief in the importance of mathematics, and finally whether any (4) gender differences emerged for these topics amongst native and amongst immigrant students.
