Learning With Multiple Representations: Framing Infographics as Cognitive Tools for Authentic Learning in Science Literacy

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 2

Abstract

Research on cognitive tools has mainly focused on technological artifacts, paying less attention to learner agency and activity structures and prompting calls for re-conceptualizing cognitive tools as processes rather than products. Based on a design-based research project with secondary school students and learner-generated infographics, this proposal presents a case study where infographics are used as “enhanced” cognitive tools in authentic classrooms to develop young adult’s science literacy. The study helps researchers in re-conceptualizing cognitive tools and teachers in designing infographic-based active learning environments.
