Factors Associated With the Attainment of a Bachelor's Degree in the Undergraduate and Temporary Reverse Transfer Student

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Employing a dataset derived from the National Center for Educational Statistics’ ELS:2002, the study uses a quasi-experimental design to determine what factors affect the attainment of a Bachelor’s degree or higher over a nine year period among reverse transfer students (n=1,564). The study used a logistic regression to ascertain which characteristics are related to a BA or higher degree outcome. The results indicated Asian Americans, females, students with higher academic levels, part-time student status and participation in extracurricular activities to be positively associated with the outcome and that participation in remedial math, working 20 or more hours a week and supporting others while in college had a negative association with the outcome. Further policy and research recommendations are discussed.
