Abstract

This study is a policy analysis of the civic mission of Indian schools. We examine the theoretical citizenship framework evidenced in Indian education policy as well as outline how this framework articulates the civic mission of Indian schools. Specifically, we focus on the following questions: (1) what is the civic mission of Indian schools; (2) what cognitive map forms the citizenship framework of Indian schools; and (3) how is this cognitive map articulated in Indian education policy documents? We argue that exploring these questions is the first step to structuring Indian schools so that they are truly democratic instruments.
