This presentation reports findings from the pilot phase of an ongoing three-year design intervention with middle school geography teachers. In the presentation, we will explore how one teacher enacted problem-based geographic inquiry and what her experience suggests about the supports needed by future teachers to implement it. Findings suggest teachers will need additional support to overcome content knowledge deficits, to adapt to the cognitive demands associated with inquiry instruction, and to establish a civic competence mission for the teaching of geography.
