Exploring the Influence of Faculty Diversity on Education Leadership Doctoral Students

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Faculty of color make up 16% of full-time faculty (NCES, 2008). In contrast to increasing trends in minority student enrollment, faculty of color numbers have not kept up (Antonio, 2003). Yet, faculty of color demonstrate a greater engagement and role in institutional transformation (Antonio, 2002). This study explores the influence of faculty diversity on doctoral educational leadership students. Approximately 40% of faculty are of color and there are a large percentage of doctoral students and graduates of color. Preliminary findings indicate that diverse faculty had an impact on all students’ awareness of race and the importance of exercising race-conscious leadership. Students of color, in particular, felt more welcomed and supported in their studies and while completing their dissertations.
