Although at a gut level it seems clear that emotions and literature seem to go hand in hand, there has not been much empirical evidence or research on this area within real classroom settings. Despite this, four areas of research on the role of emotion related to the study of literature in secondary classroom will be discussed and critiqued: 1) critical and social justice pedagogies and literacy; 2) empathy; 3) motivation and engagement; and 4) understanding and comprehension.
