This critical content analysis was conducted to examine higher education scholarship focused on student outcomes published in four top-tier journals between 1995 and 2014 for the purpose of determining the extent to which institutional racism is explored. Researchers framed the study using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and systematically evaluated 2,361 articles from The Review of Higher Education, The Journal of Higher Education, Research in Higher Education, and The Journal of College Student Development. Findings indicate that the breadth and depth of research on institutional racism in higher education is vastly limited. This study has implications for future research, policy and practice regarding creating inclusive environments to help achieve institutional goals of equal educational opportunity and equitable outcomes for all students.
