Writing effectively is an essential skill for academic success and beyond. The current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using a researcher-designed graphic organizer in preparation for argumentative writing (GOAW). In order to achieve this goal, we propose to quantitatively examine to what extent the use of a graphic organizer contributes to the according argumentative writing in terms of quantity and quality scores. In addition, we propose to provide qualitative analysis to demonstrate to what extent participants’ argumentative writing differs from or mirrors the artifacts filled out by fourth graders in the GOAW. The implications from the present research will inform effective use of the GOAW so as to facilitate students’ argumentative writing.
