Latino children represent 25% of children in the United States, with more than 50% living in immigrant families and approximately 30% living in households at or below the poverty line (Child Trends, 2014). To address the educational experiences of these children it is critical to understand how families experience their community context. Low income communities are disproportionately affected by greater levels of community violence (Aisenberg & Horenkohl, 2008). For example, Latino low-income youth are at higher risk of being exposed to violence and substance use in their neighborhood (Ceballo, Kennedy, Bregman, & Epstein-Ngo, 2012).
