Teachers are assumed to exert high influence on the quality of teaching and on student achievement. Nevertheless, studies show that teachers exhibit serious gaps in their content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. This is also true for the context of vocational education and training (VET) and especially in the domain of business education. The proposed project seeks to investigate teacher knowledge and teacher action against the background of differing teacher-education systems in the German-speaking countries. We focus on pedagogical content knowledge and especially on the knowledge of subject-related student cognition and analyze teachers’ action in commercial schools in VET using video analysis. In this proposal we report first results of a pilot study.
