"This Motivated Me to Fight for Rights of Asian Americans": Developing the Civic Leadership Capacities of Community College Students

Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Institutions that serve large proportions of racial/ethnic minority students have a unique role in serving our rapidly growing diverse populations. Since their inception, higher education institutions have had an important role in fostering the next generation of engaged and committed leaders in our society. Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in particular were first established to provide postsecondary educational opportunities for disenfranchised racial/ethnic minority populations with the added role of promoting their civic engagement (Scott, 2000). This qualitative study utilizes a case study approach (Yin, 2014) to examine the civic leadership development of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) at one Asian-serving community college. The findings reveal student gains in their civic capacities through culturally responsive approaches presented in the program.
