Why Nihilism? Using Critical Race Theories Toward Building a More Just Academy

Abstract

In this paper, I challenge critical race scholars in higher education to do more work that not only deconstructs racism but pushes us to (re)imagine what the academy should look like and how we might work toward making such visions reality. In efforts to exemplify this call myself, I walk through how Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit) (Brayboy, 2005a) and Kanaka Maoli Critical Race Theory (Author, 2014) guided me in conducting research that was ultimately concerned with improving higher education experiences and outcomes for Native students and communities.
