Discourses of postcolonialism, decolonization, and globalization provide critical, interdisciplinary frames for the work of advancing equal educational opportunity in the 21st century. Drawing on a 2014-15 Fulbright-funded qualitative study (Examining the Intersections of Globalization, Privatization, and Education after Two Decades of Economic Liberalization in India), this keynote traces transnational forces – e.g., global corporatism – that strip funding for public education and reinforce colonial legacies and opportunity gaps. Under these circumstances, what are some common challenges pertaining to education work across geographic contexts? How would we rethink “business as usual?” How might we seek solutions that are both shared and context-specific in order to advance equity and social justice in global times?
