Using Foucauldian genealogy, we present an analysis of the history of the school-to-prison pipeline. First, by deconstructing school documents, we highlight the criminalization of populations who do not conform to the dominant norms of traditional schooling. Second, we juxtapose school documents with contemporary practice of schooling to show how current educational policies normalize the school-to-prison pipeline and marginalize minority youth from equitable education. Third, we present our own experiences working with youth in prisons as a move toward ending the school-to-prison pipeline and fighting for equity and social justice in education.
