Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 3

Abstract

This paper will highlight a three-part intervention to enhance the success of at-risk middle school students. Utilizing SIG funds, one middle school identified students for mentoring, career readiness, and academic support. Mentoring support included regularly scheduled, individualized attention to target students. Career readiness support focused on implementation of ACT Career Ready 101, well-matched job site and college visits, and participation in a youth summit. Academic Support addressed the performance of identified students through intensive reading strategies instruction within a tiered literacy framework. Participants will learn about outcomes, including student absenteeism, discipline referrals, state assessment passage rates, grade average, standardized reading performance, as well as explore the usability of the intervention model in other schools.
