Reading and Reproducing Fairy Tales With a Critical Lens

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan East Room

Abstract

This study examines the digital and critical literacy practices of second and third graders in Turkey, while the students reading and reproducing the well-known classic fairy tales. Under the guidance of the teachers, the students read the fairy tales in class with a critical lens, and discussed the parts of the tales that they found problematic (e.g., the parts that promote gender inequity, etc.). Then, the children reproduced the fairy tales in an iPad application called Puppet Pals by changing the characteristics of the main characters in the fairy tales to produce better or fairer stories. It is discussed in this study how using the critical literacy approach affected the students’ participation to class discussions and production of digital stories.
