De Sueños a Posibilidades: Strengthening Collaboration Between Recently Arrived Salvadoran Parents and Teachers

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 10:15am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Concourse Level, Concourse G Room

Abstract

One of the sueños, dreams, of recently arrived Salvadoran parents when they come to the U.S. is for their children to receive the very best education that they were not able to obtain in El Salvador. Nonetheless, when recently arrived Salvadoran parents begin to familiarize themselves with the way some public schools serve their children, they quickly realize that the sueños they have for their children are not always shared by these schools.

The purpose of this research was to conduct an in-depth qualitative research study that asked: What perspectives do recently arrived Salvadoran parents have about their children’s education in U.S. public schools? Specifically, this study was based on data from six recently arrived Salvadoran parents in Washington, D.C.
