The Relationship Between College Students' Sense of Purpose and Degree Commitment

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 2

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between college students’ sense of purpose and degree commitment. The latent correlations showed that degree commitment was positively and moderately correlated with all three factors of purpose (i.e., awareness of purpose, awakening to purpose, and altruistic purpose). However, in the following step involving specification of a structural model with the three sense of purpose factors specified as predictors of the degree commitment; only awakening to the purpose and altruistic purpose factors emerged as significant and positive predictors of degree commitment. Implications for college counseling, student affairs, and future research will be presented in the context of college students' success and outcomes.
