Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

In an era where academic writing is increasingly digital, understanding how teens navigate an abundance of information to compose researched essays is doubly important. Furthermore, understanding the impact of particular processes on the quality of product is an aspect of compositional research that is relatively unexplored. The purpose of this research, conducted with 66 middle school students, was twofold: (1) to explore research methods for investigating writing processes, and (2) to identify what aspects of process may contribute to the quality of products. Results indicated that commenting on information immediately after capturing it from the Internet affected the final scores. These results point to a particular aspect of a writer’s process that may affect the quality of the product.
