A Negative Case Analysis: Support for Students of Color and Women in STEM Graduate Programs

Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 6:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Regent Parlor

Abstract

To strengthen developing theory about inclusive graduate education, we undertook a negative case analysis of 29 students’ narratives about faculty support in STEM doctoral programs. Guided by structuration and intersectionality theories, we found parallel spectra of interactions (individual faculty-student interactions and institutional interactions) that individually and interactively shaped the support that women and students of color perceived.
